SCOTT HASTINGS:
Male, Mid 20-30
The charismatic leading man who defies the dancing establishment to display his own unique style of dance and so alienates family and friends along the way all except Fran. Acting age mid 20’s. Must have formal dance training and be open to learn Ballroom and Latin styles, be confident in vocals and acting. A large role and a real show stealer!
FRAN:
Female, 20-25
The eventual love interest for Scott, a timid dance student at the Kendall studios where she can’t find a partner after two years. Her faith in Scott’s ability and her own growth as a person leads them both to the finals of the Pan Pacific Ballroom Competition. Acting age 20-21. Of Spanish heritage our Fran should be able to dance well and show ability in Ballroom and Latin styles. Vocal and acting an essential ingredient.
BARRY FIFE:
Male, 60s
The President of the ‘Federation’, Barry is an autocratic bombastic character who tries to expel Doug from competition dancing (he fails). An important role with acting age 60ish, with strong vocal and acting ability. No formal dancing required.
SHIRLEY HASTINGS:
Female, 50s
Scott’s long suffering Mum. A wonderful strong character role with good vocal and dance ability required. A choice role for someone of acting age 50 ish. She teaches dance at Kendall’s studios and tries to get Scott to ‘toe to Federation’ line. She too fails! Important role in the story and a possible ‘show stealer’.
LES KENDALL:
Male, 40s
The owner of Kendall’s Studio and mentor/teacher to young Scott. Les and Shirley were dance partners in the past. This character is a plum role for someone in their 40’s. Dance and acting ability essential, with vocal ability also required.
DOUG HASTINGS:
Male, 50s
Scott’s Dad. This role, played by Barry Otto in the film, is a beautiful character piece for an actor who can move well. Singing essential as well. He needs to execute some bizarre solo dance moves but does not formally dance. Acting age 50 ish. His retiring nature brings instant sympathy to the role.
LIZ HOLT:
Female, Early 20s
Scott’s Ballroom/Latin partner. Must show ability to dance and sing well. Acting age early 20’s. Strong and volatile character, she has some of the best lines in the show!
WAYNE BURNS:
Male, Mid 20s
Scott’s mate and fellow competition dancer. Like the others, Wayne must show dance and vocal ability. Acting age mid 20’s. Wayne is always striving to ‘make it’ in the competitions but just misses out!
TINA SPARKLE:
Female, Mid – Late 20s
Everyone wants to dance with Tina as she’s a knock-out! Partner to Ken Railings (see below). Everyone tries to get Scott to team up with Tina to win the Pan Pacific’s. He chooses Fran. Acting age mid to late 20’s.
KEN RAILINGS:
Male, 30-40
An ageing over blown show-off dancer. Ken has a liking for alcohol and often appears drunk. He beats Scott to the trophy by sticking to the ‘rules’. Once again singing and acting an essential. Acting age 40 ish.
JJ SILVERS:
Male, 40s
The ‘over the top’ Competition Master of Ceremonies who has a prominent role throughout the show. Does not dance but must have a real ‘showman’s’ ability to deliver dialogue. Acting age 40ish.
RICO:
Male, Late 40s
Fran’s Spanish Dad. Needs to have strong Latin dance experience and shows Scott how to do the ‘Paso Doble’. Spanish accent required. He does have vocals. Brooding and strong character.
ABUELA:
Female, 70s
Fran’s Grandmother. Strong character role for a singer/dancer. Need to speak some Spanish in the show (in the script). Shows Scott how to listen to the beat of his heart. Acting age 70 however makeup, body language and wig will assist in creating this amazing character.
ENSMBLE BALLROOM DANCERS:
Vanessa, Nathan, Terry, Charm, Clarry, Pam, Natalie & Others.
CHILDREN’S ROLES
KYLIE HASTINGS:
KYLIE – Minor supporting role
Age Range: 10 – 12 years old
Description: Scott’s Sister.
Skills: Must be a strong dancer, ballroom training a bonus. Acting and singing skills required.
LUKE:
Male, 10-12
Kylie’s ballroom dance partner. Must be a strong dancer, ballroom training a bonus. Acting and singing skills required.
