Barrackers!
If theres such a thing as a classic football
comedy, then Barrackers is probably it!
Matt Byrne, Glenn Butcher, Mariusz Horn and P.J.
Oaten as Weasel, Bazz, Stazz and Deano, take us through all the
torments, passion, inebriation, irrationality and eternal optimism
of the fanatical football follower.
They barrack for the Fernwood Ferrets, a team that
hasnt had a win for two years; and with a star player called
Nathan Figjam, its easy to see why.
These four energetic performers also appear as their
team cheerleaders, players girlfriends, elderly female supporters,
media commentators, snooty sponsors and even the players themselves.
The show consists of a lightning-fast series of sketches
that take us right through a game against the Kalgoorlie Nuggets
(these are South Australian Aussie rules fanatics) to its nail-biting
but inevitable conclusion.
Its perfect pub entertainment, well-written,
energetically-performed, and all hilariously familiar to football-saturated
Melburnians.
